In this 1983 lecture, Clinical Nurse Coordinator Glenice Johnson first defines the recently discovered disease acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), then gives statistics on its current rate of infection and the demographics of those affected. Next, she briefly details the components of the immune system and how it works normally compared to when it is compromised. Modes of transmission are then outlined, followed by a lengthy overview of the care of patients with AIDS that goes into more detail on all of these points. This includes both treatment of the patients and best practices for ensuring the health of hospital staff. After her presentation, Nurse Johnson answers questions from the audience.
