Abstract:
(Critical) Through a case description of the recipient of a bone marrow transplant this program discusses this procedure in the treatment of acute leukemia. The clinical conference, decision-making process, matching techniques, patient counseling, explantions to donor, and the procedure itself are detailed. Administration of chemotherapy, total body irradiation, and donation from a matched sibling brother of cellular components of bone marrow and peripheral blood are demonstrated. The indications of marrow transplantations, related immunological aspects, and the hazards of total body irradiation are only minimally discussed in the introduction. This case is terminal despite the treatment; however, the ultimatecauses of the patient's death are not explained. The audio quality is good, but the color of the illustrations is poor, and diagrams and written pointers are omitted. The brevity with which the material is presented does not correspond to the stated objectives, principles, precautions, dangers, or benefits of the procedures. This brief overview is recommended with reservations for use.
