Abstract:
This film is number five in a series titled Infants at High Risk, a series of teaching programs in the management of common problems of prematurity. This installment is hosted by Dr. George J. Peckham, Director of the ICU at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Instructions are given for steps a perinatal team can take to prevent serious infections in newborns and to provide early diagnosis and treatment of those infants who are infected. These include proper maintenance of equipment, the work environment, and medical personnel. Emphasis is placed ensuring sterile conditions, particularly when surgical procedures are performed. Consistent monitoring of infants is also important in order to spot any developing problems.
