In this program, Dr. Benjamin Brooks reviews the ongoing research at the Medical Neurology Branch of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke into the viral, metabolic, and immunologic studies on the etiology and pathogenesis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and associated motor neuron diseases. ALS is characterized by delayed onset, typically not showing symptoms until late adulthood. Medical professionals have not found the cause of the disease, though researchers have attempted to study ALS in relation to polio or Parkinson’s disease to discover more about possible cures. Experimentation with mice has also been conducted. Several different theories concerning the cause of ALS are presented, with evidence both supporting and contradicting these claims.
