In this program, Dr. Valerie Askanas explains how tissue cultures of human muscle can be used to discover the pathogenesis of neuromuscular diseases. Cultures are able to reproduce changes in a patient's muscle biopsy, and the primary character of muscle disorders can be anticipated. The program discusses approaches for growing adult human muscle tissue, including using satellite cells originating from embryonic myoblasts during myogenesis, plus establishing muscle culture from human muscle biopsy.
