- Abstract:
- (Critical) This module, one in a Health Care Today series, discusses the management of colonic diseases. Clinical vignettes illustrate specific gastrointestinal problems: chronic low-grade rectal bleeding, acute massive rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and diarrhea. This is an introduction to the new modalities available in the diagnosis and treatment of certain gastrointestinal conditions. The role, techniques, and indications of double contrast barium enema, colonoscopy, and angiography in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease are summarized and the therapeutic role of colonoscopy and angiography are discussed in very general terms. Because the technique has improved significantly, the material is already outdated. The information is at a basic introductory level and the production's technical quality is quite poor. It is recommended for use for medical students, nurses, and general practitioners. and This video shows a panel of doctors who analyze the treatment of two different patients who were experiencing either rectal bleeding or abdominal pain. Various treatments included a colonoscopy, an angiogram, and a bowel resection. Special care must be taken during emergency surgery for severe colonic bleedings, since this event carries an especially high morbidity and mortality rate. Various instruments and black-and-white images are shown to help demonstrate different medical techniques.
