- Abstract:
- (Critical) This program presents a discussion of the pathophysiology of hypertension its clinical management. Areas that require therapy are outlined and types of therapy are discussed. The presentation is well done, however, alternate viewpoints are not dealt with; more recent concepts in the management of hypertension are never broached; and some opinions are stated in an oversimplified fashion. Thus, the program is recommended with reservations for cardiologists and practitioners of internal medicine. and Dr. Edward Freis, a Lasker Award winner for his research on hypertension, educates viewers on different types of hypertension, their severity, and what can be done to treat the condition. There are varying levels of hypertension; for example, those with fluctuating blood pressures have a better prognosis than those with consistently high blood pressure. Potential at-home treatments include weight reduction and low-sodium diets, but these methods prove difficult for many people, with mixed results. Dr. Freis recommends diuretics as the primary treatment course. He expresses confidence that treatment and further research can continue to improve quality of life for people with hypertension.
