Abstract:
This lecture, recorded at the 24th Annual Armed Forces Seminar on Obstetrics and Gynecology, is given by Major William R. Keye, Jr. Major Keye addresses the issue of amenorrhea following pregnancy and the endrocinologic causes of it. A recent development is the isolation and synthesis of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GNRH), which causes the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormore (FSH). The presentation details the changing pattern of gonadotropin responses to GNRH during the pueperium and contrasts these responses with those seen in normally menstruating patients, relates these changes to the hormonal milieu which occurs following delivery, and suggests several possible explanations for puerperal anovulation and amenorrhea.
