Psychosocial aspects of hemodialysis and kidney transplantation
Psychosocial aspects of hemodialysis and kidney transplantation
As explained by the presenter, hemodialysis and kidney transplantation can have detrimental effects on the mental health of both patient and family. The patient may be disheartened by the repetitive nature of dialysis; in addition, the patient may have to make involuntary changes such as relocating his/her residence or changing jobs. In the event that a married patient dies, the spouse must have adequate supports as well. The presenter makes it clear that in the face of mental health issues, the solution is not to make any major personality modifications, but to increase social support to both patient and family.
