Depression -- therapy
Aged - Abstract:
- (Critical) Through a series of psychiatrist-patient vignettes, this program illustrates the outpatient treatment of a recurrently depressed elderly woman as she progresses from severe depression to improvement. Between the vignettes are comments on treatment of the elderly, depressive illness and the treatment of depression by the psychiatrist interviewer. The title is misleading; the program deals with a particular depressive episode, not with the stresses of the elderly. The commentary does not make full use of the material presented in the vignettes. It fails to explain the attempt to teach slow breathing to a hyperventilator, to discuss precautions in prescribing an MAO inhibitor and to discuss difficulties in the doctor-patient relationship. and Loneliness, lack of daily activities, and frequent physical illness can often introduce new stressors to the elderly. This video includes a lengthy interview with one such woman, whose loneliness has led to recurring depression and distance from her religious beliefs. Through breathing exercises and medication, doctors are able to help her cope with her emotional struggles. Above all, the narrator urges viewers to take the elderly seriously; in a society where youth is valued, it is useful to remember that the lives of the elderly have importance, too.
