Abstract:
With the aid of drawings and animation, this program examines the problem of infections contracted by newborns in hospital nurseries, and discusses possible solutions to preventing them. The hospital environment and personnel as causes of infection are discussed. The film describes the manner in which organisms can be transmitted from staff to newborns and notes that rarely is an infection transmitted from the mother at birth. Measures to prevent nursey sepsis include handwashing, personal hygiene, wearing protective gowns, placing fresh linings on scales before infants are weighed, and other actions. The film also addresses the hospital environment and its many potential reservoirs and sources of infection. A physical and design plan for infant nurseries reduce the presence and spread of nursery sepsis is mentioned. The film then outlines techniques for cleaning nursey equipment. The importance of providing follow-up of newborns who have contracted infections is stressed.
