Describes an inventive health care system tested in Candelaria, Colombia in the 1960s-1970s. Volunteers are provided with medical training in order to offer basic services to others in the community, and auxiliary nurses, midwives, and others with training but not medical degrees play an important role. The film emphasizes care around obstetrics and gynecology as well as family planning advice. Pregnant women are followed closely to ensure pre-natal care and to handle higher-risk pregnancies by referring to the doctor. Each team is supervised by a doctor and graduate nurse. The film notes a drop of 65 percent in infant mortality over 10 years and a significant reduction in infectious disease. Immunization is discussed and shown, as is dental health.
