Hopital auxiliaire de l'Afrique Occidentale N° 506: la salle d'opérations
Hopital auxiliaire de l'Afrique Occidentale N° 506: la salle d'opérations
This black and white photographic postcard shows a group of nurses observing or assisting in an operation at an auxiliary hospital during WWI. Wounded from the front were evacuated to auxiliary hospitals established and run by the Red Cross. Those in the 500 series, such as the one shown here, were managed by l’Association des dames françaises (A.D.F). The patient lies on the table, covered by a sheet from the waist to his feet. His left arm is in a cast. Two men are performing a procedure on the patient's right arm. Another man stands by the patient's head. Seven female nurses surround the operating table. The nurse at the foot of the table is holding an instrument and the nurse at the head of the table has her hand on the patient's pillow. The other nurses are observing. The nurses all wear long white uniforms, aprons, and veils. Some have crosses on the apron or veil. There is a small table at the foot of the operating table. On it are a couple of basins and other items. There is a sink behind the door at the right side of the postcard and a radiator against the wall on the left side of the card.
