This black and white photographic postcard shows a hospital ward for bubonic plague patients in Mumbai during the epidemic that began in 1896. Harry Soundy, the owner of Clifton and Co., photographed patients and hospitals and produced postcards in order to show what was being done to address the plague. The view in the postcard looks down the length of the ward. The walls appear to be wood, lined with windows, and the ceiling is beamed. Rows of cots with patients line the walls. Down the middle of the ward there are tables and chairs and a plant in a stand. Four people, presumably medical staff, stand at the rear of the room.
