- Abstract:
- This black and white photographic postcard shows a group of people standing on a balcony at the Annie Tracy Riggs Hospital in Harpoot, Turkey. The name of the hospital and its founding date (1910) are inscribed on the building above the balcony. One woman holds a child, and the message on the postcard verso identifies her as "Mrs Atkins" [Tacy Atkinson]. Tacy Atkinson was a Christian missionary who served in Harpoot from 1902-1908 and again from 1909-1917. Another woman, dressed all in white and holding a child's hand is identified as Miss Jacobson. Maria Jacobson (or Jacobsen) was a Danish missionary who served in Harpoot from 1907 until 1919, working mainly as a head nurse. The other three women are identified as Armenian nurses. They are wearing dark, long-sleeved dresses, white aprons and white caps. Both Tacy Atkinson and Maria Jacobsen witnessed and documented the Armenian Genocide.
