This black and white postcard shows the interior of the hospital at Ro̧ca Agua Izé, a former cocoa plantation and factory on Sao Tome Island. The hospital was originally built in 1914, but due to demand a second unit in the same style was built in 1928. The postcard depicts two rooms, connected by a large arched doorway. The walls are pale with dark trim. The floor is tiled in a checkerboard of dark and light squares. Along the walls are tall windows, with three sashes that each open inward and down. Beds with black metal frames and striped blankets line the walls and each has a small shelf mounted on the wall next to it. Patients sit on many of the beds, facing the camera and wearing dark clothing. Three male nurses wearing long white gowns are also shown. One holds a large bottle and spoon, apparently giving medicine to a patient. Another is standing before a large tray that holds bottles. The third stands farther back against the arched doorway with his left hand on his hip.
