Building health and resiliency: Philadelphia’s 11th Street Family Health Services
KEY FEATURE. The federally qualified health center is run by nurses and serves public housing residents and others in North Philadelphia, where the poverty rate surpasses 40 percent. TARGET POPULATION. Most of its patients are African American women covered by Medicaid. Many have chronic medical conditions; a high number have experienced trauma. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT. 11th Street Family Health Services has been a pioneer in using creative arts therapies and mind-body interventions along with traditional counseling to help people cope with behavioral and physical health problems. BENEFITS. Patients have been willing to try nontraditional counseling approaches and also have benefitted from the social support they've found in groups. CHALLENGES. The health center depends on grants to fund some of its more innovative services, as its leaders develop the evidence base to make the case for payer reimbursement.
