Osler was a student at McGill Medical School from 1870-1872; after this time he spent two years studying abroad. The back of this portrait shows an inscription in Osler's handwriting; it was presented by Osler to his sister Ellen Mary (also Mrs. A. E. Williamson), or "Nellie" as she was known to the family..
