Abstract:
Courtesy of National Museum of Health and Medicine: "Benger is checking bottles of blood with that of the wounded to make sure both are compatible.". The auxiliary surgical hospitals (later called Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals) were conceived and developed by DeBakey and the Surgical Consultants in the first years of World War II. They greatly improved battlefield injury survival rates by getting surgical care closer to the front lines. Photos like this, taken during the Korean war (1950-1953), provide a closer look at the operations of the surgical units, including the addition of helicopters for transporting the wounded.
