Abstract:
Courtesy of National Museum of Health and Medicine: "The wounded man is strapped in a special helicopter stretcher while a soldier holds the top which will be attached to the stretcher to prevent the patient from slipping out while in flight.". The auxiliary surgical hospitals (later called Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals) were conceived and developed by DeBakey and the Surgical Consultants in the first years of World War II. They greatly improved battlefield injury survival rates by getting surgical care closer to the front lines. Photos like this, taken during the Korean war (1950-1953), provide a closer look at the operations of the surgical units, including the addition of helicopters for transporting the wounded.
