Contributor(s):
Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons DeBakey, Michael E. (Michael Ellis), 1908-2008
Publication:
American College of Surgeons, [November-December 1959]
Here DeBakey chronicled his first visit to the Soviet Union December 15-20, 1958, where he attended a surgical conference and learned more about the state of surgical practice there. Despite the Cold War, DeBakey reached out to his colleagues in the USSR several times, to foster educational exchange as much as he could. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was asked to advise surgeons about the health of Russian president Boris Yeltsin.
