Abstract:
In this article, DeBakey described the use of blood and blood plasma in a range of disease states, and the proper procedure for collecting, preserving, and administering these fluids. This article (and The Blood Bank, by DeBakey and Kilduffe, published the same year) reflected the enormous advances made in blood banking during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and their great importance to military medicine during World War II.
