Sokoloff later noted, "This paper provides clear evidence that the increases in glucose utilization in the nervous system evoked by functional activation is localized to synapse-rich areas in neuropil and not at all in the perikarya, and that the increases in glucose utilization are linearly related to the spike frequency in the afferent pathway."
