- Abstract:
- This black and white photographic postcard shows a nurse teaching a deaf and blind child to speak at the Diakonissen-Mutterhaus Oberlinhaus in Potsdam. The nurse is standing on the ground and the child is standing on a bench so as to be the same height as the nurse. The nurse holds each of the child's hands, one to the nurse's throat and one to the child's so that the child may feel the vibrations of the vocal chords when speaking. The nurse is wearing a long black dress with white apron and white cap tied under her chin. The child wears a short-sleeved dress, striped apron and dark socks and shoes. There is a garden scene behind them. The Oberlinhaus was founded in 1871 to promote the care and education of young children. In 1886 it began to work with disabled children and in 1906 it opened the Taubstummblindenheim to specifically help deaf and blind children.
