Image caption on page 111 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Grateful Med was conceived and launched in the 1980s. Director Donald A.B. Lindberg, MD, wrote this internal memo on November 29, 1985. With it, Lindberg selected the name "Grateful Med" for the product intended to help expand and ease access to databases of the library. The memo reads: 'John Anderson, re name for new microprocessor based user front end to MEDLARS. Let's use Grateful Med. It is just too good to pass up....'"
