[Mary Louise Marshall, Professor of Medical Bibliography, Tulane School of Medicine]
Image caption on page 65 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Mary Louise Marshall, Professor of Medical Bibliography, Tulane School of Medicine, served on the survey committee on the future of the Army Medical Library organized in 1943 by Harold W. Jones. Subsequently, Library Director Frank B. Rogers, MD, appointed her to the library's first Board of Regents. Marshall was the only woman and the only medical librarian to serve on that important body which determined the new location of the library on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Marshall was an expert in library classification, the system of arranging materials to allow them to be stored, retrieved, and used by patrons. She successfully chaired committees which produced the Army Medical Library's own classification scheme, the precursor of the current NLM Classification, the standard for medical libraries around the world.
