Hèroïsme de Soeur Julie, Gerbeviller 24 Aout 1914. Récompense
This postcard is one of a set that depicts the courage of Sister Julie, a French nun and nurse, in preventing the execution of a wounded French soldier under her care by a German soldier during the German withdraw from the city of Gerbéviller on August 24, 1914. Although Sister Julie did exist and did show great heroism in the face of the German atrocities, it is not known whether the event depicted in this postcard series actually occurred or was invented for propaganda purposes. Sister Julie did, however, receive the Cross of the Legion of Honor for her heroism on November 29, 1914. This postcard shows the French president, Raymond Poincaré pinning the medal on Sister Julie, while the wounded French soldier lies in bed and salutes her.
