Abstract:
This postcard is one of four that when merged show the black and white image of Elisabeth of Bavaria, Queen of Belgium in a nurse's uniform standing in front of various scenes of destruction in Visé, Belgium. The Germans entered Visé on August 4, 1914, the day of the invasion. The Queen established several hospitals for wounded soldiers, including a Red Cross hospital at the palace. She also paid many visits to the wounded. Her efforts during the war earned her the nickname of "Queen Nurse." This card shows the middle and left side of the Queen's body from shoulder to waist. She wears a white nurse's uniform with a large, curved collar. Behind her is the view of a street with damaged and destroyed buildings.
