Abstract:
This postcard is one of four that when merged show the black and white image of Elisabeth of Bavaria, Queen of Belgium in a nurse's uniform standing in front of various scenes of destruction in Visé, Belgium. The Germans entered Visé on August 4, 1914, the day of the invasion. The Queen established several hospitals for wounded soldiers, including a Red Cross hospital at the palace. She also paid many visits to the wounded. Her efforts during the war earned her the nickname of "Queen Nurse." This card shows the upper right side of the Queen's face. She wears a white nurse's veil. Behind her are the ruins of several buildings and soldiers kneeling, some with guns raised.
