Ambulance drivers gathered in front of a fleet of ambulances as part of the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Service. The service was formed in 1914 by Richard Norton, an American archaeologist who served as its director, and A. Herman Harjes, a French banker. Norton-Harjes affiliated with the American Red Cross, and its members incurred a six-month obligation with the Red Cross when they joined.
