People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) have traditionally faced challenges accessing health insurance coverage and health care. On average, LGBT individuals experience greater exposure to violence and homelessness, as well as higher rates of poverty, tobacco and substance use, psychiatric disorders, HIV infection, and cancer. These disparities are even more pronounced for LGBT individuals who are also members of racial and ethnic minorities and have low incomes.
