- Abstract:
- Actor Burt Lancaster is featured in this film, which focuses on teenagers and smoking. The film explores why young people begin smoking and what factors influence them. Scenes from the "smoky," shadowy world of teens are shown, and smoking is presented as an activity that appeals to teens even as more evidence emerges that it is gravely harmful to one's health. Made by the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, the film includes footage of Building 31 on the NIH campus, the USPHS quarantine station at San Pedro, California, and public health offices in Chicago and Denver. The role of advertising in encouraging smoking is criticized. Dr. Luther L. Terry, US Surgeon General from 1961-1965, is interviewed by an off-camera host, as is Dr. William Stewart, the Surgeon General from 1965-1969.
