The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) contains several provisions which may alter the scope and practice of public health. As a result, governmental public health departments must evolve in order to accommodate the new health landscape and changing demands on the system. Three governmental public health departments--Massachusetts, San Diego, Vermont--are taking unique approaches to this opportunity for public health to innovate in the wake of health systems change.
