The Affordable Care Act required states to expand their Medicaid programs to cover more low-income people, including midlife adults. However, a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, while upholding the rest of the health reform law, effectively turned the mandate into a state option. This Insight on the Issues examines the Court's decision and how uninsured midlife adults in states that take up this option could benefit.
