Her Gracious Majesty Queen Alexandra: queen of roses and of hearts
Her Gracious Majesty Queen Alexandra: queen of roses and of hearts
Postcard featuring a black and white photograph of Queen Alexandra who is sitting in a carriage and receiving roses from a young girl. The event was likely Alexandra Rose Day, which was launched in 1912 by the Queen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her arrival from Denmark to marry the future King Edward VII. The annual event raised money for hospitals. Alexandra is dressed all in black, including a black hat and veil, as she was in mourning for King Edward who had died in 1910. She is seated alone in a black open carriage. She is turned to her right to accept a large bouquet of roses from a child. The child is wearing a flowered dress and a large brimmed had ringed in flowers with a large dark ribbon. The child's face is hidden as she is turned to the queen and holding the bouqet.
