The first published illustration of the double helix. James D. Watson and Francis H. C. Crick, "Molecular structure of Nucleic Acids: a structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid," Nature 171, 25 [April 1953]: pp. 737-38. The caption reads: "The figure is purely diagrammatic. The two ribbons symbolize the two phosphate-sugar chains, and the horizontal rods the pairs of bases holding the chains together. The vertical line marks the fibre axis."
