In this article Heidelberger gave an account of an interdisciplinary conference on complement he had organized, and which was held on Shelter Island, New York, from June 12 to 15, 1950. It was attended by scientists from a range of fields, including the biochemist Severo Ochoa and the geneticist Colin M. MacLeod.
