After moving to Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, Heidelberger worked with Forrest Kendall to develop a method for determining the specific polysaccharide in type III pneumococcus by using only small amounts of the substance. A procedure that would allow scientists to identify the polysaccharide at hand would allow them to determine the pneumococcal strain present, as each type of pneumococcus possesses a unique polysaccharide capsule.
