Sawyer spent much of 1927 in west Africa, supervising and evaluating the Rockefeller Foundation's yellow fever research there. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "House where two cases of y. f. came down in 26 [days(?), hours(?)]. Oshogbo. 1927."
