Wilbur A. Sawyer and Freda Bage at the palace ruins at Sigiri Rock, Ceylon
Wilbur A. Sawyer and Freda Bage at the palace ruins at Sigiri Rock, Ceylon
The Sawyer family left Australia in January 1924, returning to New York via Ceylon, India, Egypt, and Europe. Dr. Sawyer, as the Rockefeller Foundation's assistant regional director for the East, spent the first part of the journey visiting RF hookworm control sites (and potential sites) in Ceylon and India, but combined this with sightseeing. Here, he and Freda Bage (a family friend) visited the palace ruins of Sigiri Rock. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "On the king's outdoor seat. Sigiri Rock. Mar. 7, 1924. Miss Bage and W.A. Sawyer."
