The Sawyer children and their ayah, Podihami, at their bungalow "Kudsia" in Colombo, Ceylon
The Sawyer children and their ayah, Podihami, at their bungalow "Kudsia" in Colombo, Ceylon
The Sawyer family left Australia in January 1924, returning to New York via Ceylon, India, Egypt, and Europe. Dr. Sawyer, as the Rockefeller Foundation's assistant regional director for the East, spent the first part of the journey visiting RF hookworm control sites (and potential sites) in Ceylon and India, but combined this with sightseeing. The family stayed several weeks at a rented bungalow in Colombo named Kudsia, with family friend Freda Bage. An ayah (nanny) was hired to help care for the children. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, [from left to right:] "Gertrude, the Ayah (Podihami), Peggy, Billy and Ruth, at 'Kudsia,' Colombo. Feb. 1924."
