Abstract:
During a question-and-answer session that followed his speech, Koop suggested that while he would never personally recommend abortion, as a public health officer he had no objection against a pregnant women with AIDS receiving an abortion to eliminate the risk of transmitting her disease to her child. Koop thereby intertwined, in the minds of his critics if not his own, the two major moral and political struggles that defined his tenure as U.S. Surgeon General, the struggles over AIDS and abortion.
