Address Presented to the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, Charlotte, North Carolina
Koop, himself a born-again Christian, sought to convince other evangelical Christians that talking publicly about AIDS and disseminating information about how to protect oneself from the epidemic, including sexually explicit information, was not tantamount to an endorsement of homosexuality or sexual promiscuity, but rather was in the best tradition of Christian empathy and love of others. Nevertheless, many religious conservatives during the 1980s remained critical of Koop's campaign against AIDS, and especially of his advocacy of sexual education in schools.
