This speech highlighted the connection between Americans' diet and their health, especially heart disease, a major focus of the U.S. Surgeon General since Koop's predecessor, Julius Richmond, devoted to it a section of his path breaking report "Healthy People: The Surgeon General's Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention," issued in 1979.
