Abstract:
Freis' Veterans Administration team reported in this follow-up article that in a double-blind study, hydrochlorothiazide (a diuretic) was more effective than propranolol (a beta-blocker that slows the heart rate and pumping volume) at assisting patients achieve the goal diastolic blood pressure and required fewer alterations to treatment. However, the team did report that white patients did respond better to propranolol than did black patients.
