In the 1980s, several diuretics common in the treatment of hypertension were widely suspected as causing several dangerous medical conditions, including hypokalemia (an abnormally low level of potassium in blood) and heart disease. In this article, Freis defended the use of thiazide diuretics for treating high blood pressure, citing several recent studies that indicated that they were safe.
