Abstract:
Varmus here summarized his research on DNA synthesized from retroviral RNA (a so-called provirus), which contains nucleotide sequences--the letters of the DNA alphabet--at its ends that are repeated several times. From the site at which viral DNA is inserted into the genome of host cells, these terminal repeats can influence the expression of cellular as well as other viral genes in their vicinity, in some cases causing these genes to produce cancerous growth.
