Abstract:
This address was given at the 1895th Stated Meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at Rockefeller University.. Mid-way through George W. Bush's years as U.S. President, Varmus talked about the alienation and anxiety then present in the scientific community, and their roots in perversions of policy making, regressive policies, poor prospects for funding, discouragement of trainees, and religion in the classroom. He noted that Bush et al. were not the originators of these trends, only enablers.
