Varmus's testimony before the Subcommittee on Health and Environment, Committee on Commerce, U.S. House of Representatives
Varmus provided further explanation about the potential benefits of somatic cell nuclear transfer; he noted that since "Dolly" (the sheep cloned in 1997) the National Bioethics Advisory Committee had concluded that human cloning should be deferred for a while, but that any legislation should be carefully written so as not to interfere with other important research. The committee planned to re-evaluate in 3-5 years. Over 67,000 scientists in this research area signed voluntary moratorium on human cloning work..
