In this draft Varmus reviewed the contentious scientific, medical, and political issues surrounding the work of a subcommittee of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses that was charged with the task of proposing a uniform nomenclature for the human retrovirus that causes AIDS. After more than a year of deliberations, the subcommittee, which Varmus chaired, proposed the name human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV.
